To Lose weight, eat less salt

I’ve had many people ask me “Jeff, how do I lose weight?” My answer usually surprises them: First lower the amount of salt (sodium) in your diet, then increase your water consumption!
When trying to lose weight, most people try to watch their fat and or carbs intake. This is great to do, but it overlooks one main reason people are overweight: sodium! Too much sodium in your food causes you to retain water. This is why when you add more water to your eating plan without decreasing sodium intake you don’t lose any weight from exercising.
Just not adding salt to food isn’t enough, you have to read the labels to see how much sodium is in the food you eat. I personally try to eat food that contains no more than 400 mg of sodium. When I do this it really limits my choices of food I consume, but this along with drinking more water (I try to drink one and a half gallons per day) helps me control water weight. People tend to think that having too much fat is what makes them heavy when water weight is just as much -- if not more -- of a problem.
